Welcome!

Welcome Message from Asia–Pacific Finance and Development Institute

It is with great pleasure that the Asia–Pacific Finance and Development Institute (AFDI)—a public institution directly affiliated with the Ministry of Finance of the People’s Republic of China—co-hosts the 2019 Asian Evaluation Week (AEW) with the Independent Evaluation Department (IED) of the Asian Development Bank. Since its inaugural in 2016, three AEWs has been successfully held in Xi’an, Hangzhou, and Chengdu respectively, which have embarked on a new journey for us to build a platform for knowledge and experience sharing on evaluation among countries and development partners.

In order to enhance accountability, improve efficiency, and promote development through learning, M&E service shall be provided with high quality and high efficiency. Especially for Asia, we still shoulder heavy responsibilities along the long way of enhancing M&E capacity. This requires us to continuously provide such platforms as Asian Evaluation Week, to exchange experience and promote mutual learning. Dear friends, by cooperation and innovation, let’s jointly cope with the challenges; and by working together, let’s build a brighter future!

We wish everyone a happy stay in Kunming, a city with a glorious history and splendid culture.

Our best wishes for a successful Asian Evaluation Week.

With warmest regards,

Li Kouqing

Welcome Message from the Independent Evaluation Department of Asian Development Bank

On behalf of Asian Development Bank’s Independent Evaluation Department (IED) it is with great pleasure that I welcome you to the 2019 Asian Evaluation Week. I would like to thank the organizers of this conference, especially our partner, the Asia–Pacific Finance and Development Institute of the People’s Republic of China for bringing all of us together in this beautiful City of Eternal Spring, Kunming.

Our theme for this year, “Quality Evaluation for Better Results: Local, National, Regional Perspectives” underscores the importance of high-quality evaluation in generating credible evidence and knowledge required for achieving effective development results. This conference recognizes that evaluation operates, and is influenced by, developments at the local, national and regional levels, and concerted efforts at these levels are central in attaining the Sustainable Development Goals. Collectively ensuring that we provide quality evaluations while striving for excellence guarantees a lasting influence of our work in delivering development results.

Now in its fourth year, we remain confident that the 2019 Asian Evaluation Week, as one of the leading evaluation events in Asia and the Pacific, will provide you with an invaluable learning experience. We would like to encourage all participants to take full advantage of the many opportunities this conference offers. We wish you a productive week ahead.

Welcome Message from the 2019 AEW Secretariat

On behalf of the Secretariat of the 2019 Asian Evaluation Week, we thank the participating countries and development partners for their continued support to this year’s event theme “Quality Evaluation for Better Results: Local, National, Regional Perspectives”.

The AEW Secretariat is jointly managed by the Asia-Pacific Finance and Development Institute of the Ministry of Finance of the People’s Republic of China and the Independent Evaluation Department of the Asian Development Bank. Working from our respective bases in Manila and Shanghai, the Secretariat team worked in close coordination to bring this event to you.

As in previous years, the AEW provides an excellent venue for colleagues engaged in evaluation to network and share ideas on how evaluation can better support development effectiveness. We encourage participants to interact with each other, engage in the sessions, and share your learning when you go back home. We thank everyone for their contribution.

With best wishes,

What it's like to attend

  • I hope it is not too late to express how glad I am to have participated in the AEW 2018 and how useful I found the sessions. The conversation we had at the Panel also facilitated our conversation with the IMF team of the independent report. We agreed to advance the conversation during the upcoming spring meeting. So the AEW was also good networking opportunity.

  • I would like to thank you for a very informative and impactful conference. The networking opportunities, topics and knowledge shared were incredibly valuable. We look forward to next year’s event and would love the opportunity to participate more actively and bring some of the DBSA’s experiences and challenges to the discussion.

We would greatly appreciate any suggestions you or those responsible can provide to assist in our progression into this important area of evaluation.
